The newly appointed Dallas County Treasurer shares how the role’s been so far a couple months into it.

Summer Portzen, who recently was promoted to the Dallas County Treasurer in November, has lived in the area for the last decade and began as an appraiser for the assessor’s office.

Following that, Portzen wanted a change and applied for the Tax Administrator role in the property tax office for the last two years. Portzen detailed that she hasn’t made any changes yet in her new role as the board is accepting applications to take over the Tax Administrator role.

The Supervisors board was looking for a replacement after the retirement of Mitch Hambelton in October. In the short time that Portzen has been the County Treasurer, she describes how the transition has been.

“It’s actually been pretty smooth. When I was first hired on as a Tax Administrator, Mitch had made it very clear to me that his goal for me was to basically teach me everything he knew as to future proof the office, so I was fortunate enough to work for and learn from Mitch for the last two years. And it has prepared me to step into this role pretty confidently.”

Portzen praises Hambelton, calling him ‘one of the best bosses’ she’s ever had, and hopes to keep his (Mitch) working style going forward. To stay up to date on the latest, visit dallascountyiowa.gov.
