With anticipated snow coming, the city of Jefferson is reminding residents of its snow ordinance.
Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio the snow ordinance goes into effect whenever there is 0.5 inch of accumulated snowfall. Morlan says this is when all vehicles in the residential areas need to be moved from the streets until the road is cleared from curb to curb of snow. He talks about how each snow event is different and can cause snow removal crews not operate the same way.
“Residential streets, if it’s going to be a long event the guys will go out and they’ll start just opening the streets, just plowing the centers of them. And they might cover their entire route and then have to go back and start again and hit it a second time. And then when it’s finally all done snowing, and it’s not going to accumulate much more, then they go ahead and plow it all the way back to the curbs.”
Morlan notes the downtown square also has a snow ordinance where vehicles are not allowed to be parked on the streets from 2-6am. He adds the no parking ordinance during a snow event for the downtown area is usually in effect for two nights, so crews to initially clear the roadways on the first night, and the second night crews clear them again in case businesses push snow into the streets. As a reminder, the police department can issue citations for vehicles that are left on the streets when the snow ordinance is in effect.
