Temperatures are dropping significantly this week along with heavy snow in the Raccoon Valley Radio area, and the Dallas County Engineer shares tips on safe traveling.

County Engineer Al Miller says it was only a matter of time before the sight of any good amount of snow would hit the ground again, which means the county’s plows and other snow removal crews are out during the current snow event. He points out their crews work from 5am-5pm everyday when there is a snow event. He advises motorists to be cautious when they are on the roads when their plow crews are not.

“If you have to travel for whatever reason during a storm outside of those hours, just be on alert that there may be substantial changes in the drifting and ice conditions or snow pack on our county roads that you wouldn’t necessarily see on a state highway.”

Miller reminds motorists to think about the type of road you’re driving on, referencing that state highways receive 24/7 maintenance compared to county roads. For more on winter safety, visit dallascountyiowa.gov.
