The Greene County Sheriff says roads continue to deteriorate, especially now that most of the plows have been taken off the roads.

Sheriff Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio that since noon on Saturday, they responded to over 40 stranded vehicles across the county, including some semis. He says there is a jackknifed semi on 170th Street and Q Avenue and another semi was traveling at speeds of 72 miles per hour on Highway 30. Williams points out that the county plows have pulled off the road for the night and the Iowa Department of Transportation is continuing to try to keep Highway 30 open.

He says Highway 25 by Scranton is snowed shut and that is where one vehicle and still has an occupant in it and they can’t get to that individual, but Williams says the driver has a full tank of gas, warm clothes, water and food which he will make it through to tomorrow. He adds he and the deputies have rescued everyone else and driven them home, to the Sparky’s One Stop gas station on Highway 30, or to a hotel.

Williams says with only the DOT plows out at night, he urges everyone to stay home and don’t be on the roads.
