Sec. Naig at Brewer Family Farms

The Iowa Secretary of Agriculture is starting up his annual 99-county tour for 2024 and hit up three locations in the Raccoon Valley Radio area on Friday.

Secretary Mike Naig started the day at Brewer Family Farms in Dallas Center. The beef and pork producing business sells direct to consumers and works with local meat lockers and processors. Naig talked about Brewer Family Farms newest venture.

Sec. Naig learning about Brewer Family Farms’ products

“And now what I see them doing is really try to branch out, getting product into schools, Waukee being one of them. I’m very excited about that because schools want a source local, it’s good nutritious food, shortens the distance between that plate and the farm. But you’ve got to work with those school nutrition directors. You’ve got to deliver them the quantities they need, the products they need. And so in this case, it’s a cooked product that is easier to work with for those school nutrition directors.”

Naig added that Brewer Family Farms was also a Choose Iowa Grant awardee and they are using the funds to expand their refrigeration system to handle larger quantities of their products for the schools. Later in the day, Naig also visited Dahl’s Custom Meat Locker in Bagley and he toured the Greene County Career Academy in Jefferson.
