A behavioral specialist suggests strategies on how to console children following the traumatic events that occurred at Perry High School on January 4th. Dr. David Brown, a Behavioral Health State Specialist with Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, says it’s important to take time to listen to your kids.
“But we also need to tell them that if they’re feeling afraid or upset, we’re really proud of them for sharing that. Let them know that we’re really proud of the courage. It’s tough to share those feelings with them, cause we always want to make sure the open door is open for them to come back to talk with us when they feel the need.”
Dr. Brown emphasizes that daily check-ins should be done with children by asking them how they are doing and feeling and have them take breaks from social media to unwind. Dr. Brown reminds parents that they should be taking care of themselves too by sleeping seven to nine hours, eating nutritious meals, and regularly exercising.
