It’s the first day of the four day Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena. Greene County has four wrestlers in the Class 2A first and second rounds starting at 9 a.m. Class 3A takes to the mats at 1:30 p.m. and wrestlers from 1A schools will be in action at 6 p.m.
First up for the Rams this morning is junior Gavyn Winters at 120 lbs., followed by freshman Degan Miller at 175. If they win in round one, they’ll take on a higher seeded wrestler in round two. A first round loss means a consolation match tomorrow morning, as does a loss in today’s second round.
The top eight seeded individuals in each of the 14 weight classes have a first round bye. Greene County senior Gavin Scheuermann is the number four seed at 157 lbs. and junior Brent Dennhardt is the third seed at 165. Those two will wrestle once today against a winner of a first round match among lower seeded individuals.
All three Raccoon Valley Radio stations will have play-by-play in all three classes from 14 area schools today through Saturday and the action will be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
