A group of Greene County High School students will get to travel to Ames this Saturday for a prestigious honor.

Nathan Ausberger, Jack Hansen, Gavin Vander Linden, Bill Wright and Daniel Strawn are part of the short film category and they created a five-minute 90s sitcom parody called, “VeryStellar.” It is based on the character Steve, played by Hansen, who is a jock and breaks his brother’s solar system project when he was away. Steve spends the rest of the film trying to fix it before Bruce shows back up at their house.

Ausberger and Hansen are two-time All-State Large Group Speech participants. Ausberger is the director and he talks about making it back to All-State for a second consecutive year.

“So last year we’re kind of surprised to get in because it was our first year of doing it (large group speech). We’re just kind of messing around by making a video, but it turned out really well. So the expectations for this year were definitely higher because we knew we kind of had to make it to All-State and whatnot. So I kind of just put my all into it and executed it properly, I guess.”

Vander Linden describes his initial reaction when the All-State nomination list was released.

“I mean I was really excited. We were all just in my mom’s office here at the (high) school. We were altogether like waiting for the results to drop, because they said, ‘Alright, it’ll be sometime this week. Okay it’ll be some time on Tuesday. Alright, it’ll be some time late Tuesday afternoon. So we’re all just in there waiting, you know killing time, and then we all were in there together and it was really exciting.”

The IHSSA All-State Large Group Festival is at Iowa State University and Greene County will show its short film around 3:10pm in Scheman Room 4. Click here to watch the video.
