The third week of February means the start of the track & field season at Greene County High School. Official practice can begin today in Iowa high schools. The Greene County Rams have had a considerable amount of success on the track and in the field in recent seasons and although a number of outstanding athletes graduated in 2023, the coaching staffs are optimistic about what lies ahead for 2024.
Veteran coaching staffs are headed up by Chad Morton for boys and Derek Merk for girls. Morton was a longtime track & field official before taking the reins of the boys’ program, which has enjoyed a considerable amount of success under his leadership. Merk has also had success in his previous six seasons leading the girls’ program.
The Greene County teams are scheduled to compete indoors next month more than once before opening the outdoor season. The Rams did make a schedule change with the Early Bird meet they host at Linduska Field and move it back from late March to early April.
