February is National Heart Month and Abigail Chihak, who serves as the Community Health Administrator at Dallas County Health Department suggests ways to maintain a healthy heart.

Chihak says the three main areas of eating healthy, exercising, and receiving the appropriate amount of sleep are important keys to sustaining a good heart. She highlights the “Know Your Numbers Campaign,” which is promoted specifically through the health department.

“Those are phone numbers that we like to monitor to make sure we are not putting that unnecessary stress on the heart. That’s going to be your blood pressure, your cholesterol, your blood sugar, and your body weight.”

Chihak elaborates that monitoring these areas will help prevent the risk of heart disease. She notes that people should keep in contact with their doctors to understand ways to alleviate strain in the heart.
