Media Day for Greene County High School track & field was held on Wednesday. Derek Merk is the girls’ head coach and Chad Morton is head coach of the boys’ program. Both teams have good numbers of participants with over 30 girls and more than 40 boys.

The indoor portion of the track & field season for Greene County is underway. The A.D. Dickinson Relays inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls was held on Monday for boys and Tuesday for girls. The Rams had some top 15 performances from both the girls and boys in those one-class, non-scoring meets featuring some of Iowa’s best track & field athletes.

Morton told Raccoon Valley Radio, “The 2024 has the possibility to be very special. We have more kids out for track than in recent years. We should have all, or almost all, of the events filled at meets throughout the season There will be a few new faces that you will see on our team and good talent coming back from last year. Athletes have shown great progress so far in the early season. We have been able to get outside with the nice weather, which is a big help when it comes to getting some good workouts in. One of our goals is to keep our athletes happy & healthy. We are off to a great start!”

Merk is looking forward to seeing what kind of growth this team can show. “We are looking forward to the 2024 T & F season. We are a very young team on the girls’ side. I think this opens up a lot of opportunities for girls to step up and fill roles left empty by the large senior class last year. I expect to see a lot of individual growth over the course of the season.”

The Rams send a partial boys’ squad to Ames today and Iowa State University inside the Lied Student Recreation Center for the Iowa Track & Field Coaches Association Indoor State Meet . The girls go to the same meet tomorrow.
