Iowa’s Third District Congressman Zach Nunn is in collaboration with Tyson Foods to make transition as easy as possible for employees, after the announcement of their plant shutdown in Perry.
The announcement happened this past Monday when the Tyson Foods Plant in Perry confirmed its closure later this year. Nunn tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he’s been in close proximity with the company to figure out next steps for employees and their families. Nunn acknowledges that with the loss of jobs for many people, it will put a strain on resources due to a lack of healthcare. He emphasizes that there is a housing bill being worked on relating to the relocation process, and what areas they’re working alongside Tyson.
“We have a number of federal levers that we’re aiming to pull to make sure that Tyson’ is doing the right thing by working on everything from providing assistance skills to being able to allow folks at the Perry plant from Tysons to get a new job. Reconstitution skills for them to either set up a successful new job in the community or in Dallas (County) there, or move to potential where there is another plant. And then also make sure that the communities within Dallas (County) and Perry specifically are best kept whole.”
Nunn illustrates that this situation isn’t the first of its kind he’s dealt with, and plans to be aggressive with the state of Iowa to attempt to find a new partner to come into the Perry community, since this is such a large corporation.
