Iowa Representative David Young provides more information about a law that regulates speed traffic cameras.
Young tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the House and the Senate passed House File 2681 to regulate traffic cameras. He emphasizes that the bill gives the Iowa Department of Transportation oversight on how cities and counties implement speed cameras. Young highlights that local governments can use the speed cameras but there are additional regulations attached.
“Local governments can still do the speed cameras but they’d be required to use the funds to get it approved by the Department of Transportation, and then any fines incurred by those speeding, those funds would be collected for transportation, infrastructure improvements or operational costs.”
Young notes that the bill solely applies to speed traffic cameras and not stop lights. With the legislation, the hope is that future problems regarding traffic cameras will be addressed and the funds will be given to the local entities.
