Dallas Center – Grimes boys and girls track and field teams had multiple athletes represent the Mustangs at the 2024 Drake Relays in Des Moines. During the three day event, the Mustangs were able to have tremendous finishes and break multiple school records in the process.
Weather was a factor throughout the first three days but didn’t deter the Mustangs.
On the girls side, Piper Messerly was able to put together a terrific run in the 1500 meter run getting an 8th place finish with a time of 4 minutes 41 seconds, which is a DCG record. The girls 4×800 meter relay team was the highest of the weekend for the Mustangs, as they finished 2nd with a time of 9 minutes 14 seconds, which was 21 seconds faster than the previous school record. The team consisted of Messerly, Tess Meggison, Maddie Schmitz, and Maddy Stevens.
The boys also found good numbers, with AJ Angus getting a 9th place finish with a time of 1.55.95 in the boys 800 meter run. Elias Arbuckle was able to grab an 11th place finish in the boys 1500 meter run with a time of 4 minutes 15 seconds. The boys 4×800 team had a nice run themselves as they were able to put up a time of 7 minutes 54 seconds. That team had Angus, Sam Watkins, Sam Mora, and Jack Meggison.
For the Mustangs, they will be having their full team back in action tomorrow for the Little Hawkeye Conference meets in Pella. Both the boys and the girls will be participating in the event, which is scheduled to begin at 4:30 from Pella Christian High School.
