The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.

During reports, it was mentioned that Greene County had paid over $34,000 to use the juvenile detention center in Eldora this fiscal year, which is an increase compared to the previous fiscal year. Supervisor Dan Benitz is on the Central Iowa Juvenile Committee and reported that it is longer sentences that have been the biggest factor for the increase.

The Board also discussed an application from the Greene County Fair Association for $5,000 from Louis Dreyfus. Doug Hawn said it is to expand the number of sheep and goat pens in that livestock barn, due to the 11-12 new families when they were at capacity last year and only lost one family due to high school graduation. County Auditor Billie Jo Hoskins said there was $8,300 let in that account. The Board agreed to consider the request at next week’s meeting.

The lone agenda item was an update on the Bell Tower Festival. Chair Phillip Heisterkamp said the stage will be used four times on the south plaza of the courthouse grounds during the festival, which includes the opening ceremonies, the bands on Friday and Saturday nights, and a dueling piano performance right after the parade.

Heisterkamp mentioned that Thursday night would be a free family night with inflatables and possibly a movie on the west side of the grounds. He also talked about an idea of a Tower Toss, where people would pay for a raffle ticket or get one automatically if they purchase an item from a local store to have a chance to toss an item from a height and the closest toss wins a prize. No action was taken by the Board, due to it being an update.
