A new safety feature was recently installed in the city of Jefferson.

Following a request that was made at a Street Committee meeting on March 19th by Bailey Mount to install additional safety measures at the intersection of East Lincoln Way and Vine Street, new flashing pedestrian crosswalk lights have been installed by city crews. Mount asked the committee to make that intersection safer, due to the amount of foot traffic between the Jefferson Public Library and the Greene County Community Center, including near misses with motorists almost hitting younger kids.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan says the solar powered flashing lights are activated when a pedestrian pushes the green button. Morlan notes once the flashing lights are activated, motorists must stop to allow pedestrians to cross the road in the designated crosswalk area. Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio there are batteries with the unit that stores the solar energy it collects. He feels this is a positive improvement for safety that allows the children a safer area to cross East Lincoln Way.

Funding for the over $1,800 items came from the city of Jefferson allocation of Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation money.
