Two Greene County veterans recently went on a trip to Washington DC.

Greene County Veteran Affairs Director Michael Bierl says Vietnam veterans Arthur Hardman and Raymond Gibson attended the 25th Brushy Creek Honor Flight. Bierl tells Raccoon Valley Radio the trip includes the flight to Washington DC, along with seeing the Jefferson, along with the World War II, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials; the Air Force Memorial and two off-site stops as well. He talks about what war eras can qualify a veteran to apply to go on the bi-annual trip.

“They go by the eras of the wars periods, and they got priority of course like World War II, which we had one last year go, and now they have Korean and Vietnam (Wars) also. So as long as you served during those periods of war, you didn’t have to be overseas but just served during those periods (are eligible). However now they’ve opened up peace time in between those two wars, the Korean and Vietnam, so any of those would be eligible

Bierl notes that it costs about $600 for each of the veterans to go, with Greene County getting between two and three veterans to be on each flight in May and September. Bierl says there is about $7,000 in the Honor Flight account. He says the next Honor Flight in September will be Arnold Norgaard and Harvey Schwartz going from Greene County. Bierl encourages any Greene County veteran that served during those qualifying time periods to contact him to apply and get their names added to a waiting list for a future Honor Flight.
