After the devastation that struck Greenfield a week ago, US Representative Zach Nunn says that his heart, and the hearts of his staff, was breaking for the community.
Nunn mentions that as soon as he heard what had happened, he came back from Washington D.C. as quickly as he could, so that he could be on the ground with the volunteers that came flooding to the community. He continued that his office then got busy trying to make sure that whatever help could be made available to the community, they would be. Nunn tells about what he saw when he got to Greenfield.
“But what I heard from them firsthand was just how massive a tornado like this can be. And it should be a good warning for all of us. In less than a minute, it leveled hundreds of homes. We have folks who were heroic and that they were out after the storm, helping neighbor and neighbor recover, providing water, food, assistance and shelter. But what I saw firsthand were, I mean, trucks being picked up and thrown, a block over. Houses leveled down to the stud. Literally it would suck things out of folks’s basement and throw them miles away.”
After seeing the destruction for himself, and remembering times of having to take shelter himself, Nunn tells Raccoon Valley Radio a big takeaway that those in Tornado Alley should take to heart.
“These storms are real. We need to always treat every tornado as a direct threat, and now we’ve got to be in the good position here to help recover.”
Nunn continues that being good neighbors is a big part of what is and will continue to help the residents of Greenfield as they work to recover. He adds that he wants to thank all the volunteers and first responders for the hard work they are providing, and that he believes that the community will make a recovery with such wonderful assistance.
