Five Greene County boys’ soccer players received Heart of Iowa Activities Conference recognition. First team selections were seniors Nathan Behne, Landon Carstens, and Gesser Gutierres. Seniors Gabe Ebersole and Jack Hansen were on the honorable mention list. Carstens started all 14 games for the 11-3 Rams and was a defender. Behne was a member of the “20-20” club with 29 assists and 20 goals for 69 points, and Gutierres led the entrie state in goals per match, scoring 49 goals in just 11 matches. He also had two assists and ended the season with an even 100 points. Ebersole started in goal all four years of high school for the Rams and as a senior had 66 saves to just 16 goals scored. Hansen had four goals and seven assists.
The league picks just one team, plus the honorable mention list since only five of the eight HOIAC schools have the sport. Conference champion Perry had five players named to the first team and the Blue Jays advanced all the way to the Class 2A State Tournament semifinals. Greene County was second in the conference, followed by Nevada, Central Iowa United (State Center, West Marshall), and PCM (Monroe). Roland-Story (Story City), Saydel (Des Moines), and South Hamilton (Jewell) do not have soccer. Incoming 2024-25 HOIAC member Grand View Christian (Des Moines) does field soccer programs for both boys and girls. The league’s top three teams were very close in head-to mead matches with the Blue Jays wining by one goal in overtime vs. the Rams, and also winning by one gaol vs. the Cubs. The Rams beat Nevada by that same one goal margin.
Carl Behne is the head coach and Chad Black is the assistant coach, and they are the only two coaches since the program went on its own in 2018.
