A building in downtown Jefferson is home to almost 500 Barbie dolls that are on display throughout this month.
About 480 Barbies are in the former Sensibly Chic building on the southside of the square and people can see the display on Thursdays and Sundays from noon-5pm and Fridays and Saturday from 10am-5pm. There is a $5 admission charge and kids four and under are free. The proceeds will go back to the Greene County Historical Society, as that organization was the one that came into the unique donation of the dolls that are still in their original boxes. Co-organizer Sue Richardson says there are all kinds of varieties of Barbies and people can take as long as they want to look at them.
“It depends on how long they want to look at all the little details. It could take you anywhere, if you just want to do a walk-through and see them, from 20 minutes to hours. We will also have the Barbie full size box that you can get your photo taken in.”
Co-organizer Muriel Lehman encourages everyone to also go on a Barbie-related scavenger hunt. She says there are seven participating businesses, which are on a map that you can receive at the Sensibly Chic building, and you must find a hidden Barbie in those businesses.
“Have the clerk at the store sign that you found it. Then once you get five of the seven signatures, you take it to Sensibly Chic, Barbie By The Bells Museum. The end of June when our last day that we’re open, June 30th, we’ll give away a big bag full of Barbie things.”
The Barbie By The Bells has dolls from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
