Ten Greene County High School students have met the requirements to earn a special designation.
The ten students earned the Biliteracy Seal for Spanish and French, with two of those students, Payton Grow and Brynley Ruzicka, earning both the Spanish and French Seals. Advanced Spanish Teacher Amy Van Der Meer says to receive a seal award, the students had to take eight exams, including reading, writing, listening and speaking. She points out that while the seal doesn’t mean the student is fluent in the language, they do have a good working knowledge of the language and are able to communicate with someone, understand articles, write and get their points across, listen to someone speaking and get the idea of what they are saying.
Van Der Meer notes that all but two of the students are seniors. Jeriel Mendoza Velez and Veronica Van Der Meer are sophomores, but they are bilingual as heritage speakers, meaning they already speak Spanish in their homes and have grown up with it through their families.
