Another upper story housing project is going to be underway soon in downtown Jefferson.

Why Not Us, an all female organization that owns The Centennial building at 100 East State Street, recently approved a contractor to begin work on construction of the two, one-bedroom apartments above The Centennial restaurant. The Why Not Us Board approved the lowest bidder, Westbrooke Construction of Urbandale, as the contractor, who was the same entity that renovated the main floor restaurant and the exterior of the two-story building.

The project was made possible by an Iowa Economic Development Authority Community Development Block Grant for Upper Story Housing of $453,071 last year. The Jefferson City Council approved the grant and Region XII Council of Governments as the grant administrator. The plans and design were done by Peter Franks of Franks Design Group.

The Why Not Us Board is anticipating construction to begin later this summer and their project team will continue to oversee construction and make decisions of the apartment’s interior.
