new-light-up-pedesterian-crosswalk-sign

It’s been about one month since the installation of a new safety measure in Jefferson and a local law enforcement official believes it is going well.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says the push-button activated flashing pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of East Lincoln Way and Vine Street has been serving its purpose as motorists are obeying the signals to allow pedestrians to cross safely.

“I, myself have come up to it when it was flashing and allowed people to cross in the crosswalk right there, two times, so I know it’s being used. I think that was a great addition to that area.”

Clouse reminds motorists that if an individual pushes the button to activate the flashing crosswalk lights, motorists must stop and allow any pedestrians to walk safely within the crosswalk. He adds if a motorist does not obey the flashing light and continues through the intersection, the driver could face a citation for not obeying a traffic device.

The devices were installed at the beginning of May and cost over $1,800 with payment from the city of Jefferson’s allocation of Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation funds.
