The Jefferson Public Library is hosting a free public event that involves researching family history.
Library Director Jane Millard says the Ancestry After Hours program is Friday from 6-9pm at the library. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that people can come and do family research on their own or as a group. The library subscribes to Ancestry-Library Edition, Find A Grave and there is access to the Greene County Archives. Millard suggests that with researching family histories being more convenient with the internet, people still need to double check the information they are gathering.
“But I always encourage everyone to be diligent about their own research. Don’t just rely on the research of someone else. They may not have all of their facts correct.”
Millard points out that finding family history can be difficult, but she encourages everyone to not give up.
“I’ve dug for facts for years, and years, and years even using the internet, sometimes they’re hard to uncover. And when you do, even ten years later it’s thrilling!”
Millard adds that while Friday’s program is free, limited spots are available. Contact the Adult Department at 515-386-2835.
