A special race is going on tomorrow in Adel to support a good cause.

The 15th Annual John’s Baby Steps 5K will be taking place at the Kinnick-Feller Riverside Park, 483 N 10th Street,  to raise awareness of infant and child loss. Event Organizer Jessica Gomke tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she and her husband Steve began the program in 2010 following their son passing away after 33 days. Gomke explains that the race offers recognition to young infants.

“This is our event that really brings families together to remember and celebrate their angel to let people know that their child is never forgotten and we make sure to say every child’s name, and we start it (the race) with a memory balloon release.”

Gomke adds that the other part of John’s Baby Steps’ mission is on education and prevention, and highlights a cool aspect involving schools.

“We donate defibrillators to schools. We’ve put 54 defibrillators in 10 central Iowa schools; in Dallas, Adair, Guthrie, and Madison Counties.”

In addition to the 5K Run, Gomke says there will be a Memory Walk and Kids Fun Run. The cost to register is $30 and will begin at 8am tomorrow morning.
