The Greene County Conservation Naturalist has been busy getting out into the county.

Naturalist Jacob Fernholz started in his new position two months ago, but has already started programs with the pre-kindergarteners with the Paton-Churdan School District.

“I met the class down at Sally’s Alley (in downtown Jefferson) and they were walking through and taking a look at some of the photos of birds in the alley, and trying go ahead and identify some of the birds and colors involved in those birds and how they utilize the colors to identify them.”

Fernholz points out that this past Friday, he led the same pre-k students with a bird color book to reinforce the lesson he taught them at Sally’s Alley earlier in the week.

Other programs that are upcoming for Fernholz are on October 17th at 6:30pm at the Rippey United Methodist Church, hosted by the Rippey Lions Club and on November 10th with the Friends of Greene County Parks at 2pm at the Historical Museum in Jefferson. He is also at the H.F. Maude E. Marchant Memorial Library in Scranton, as he puts on a fire prevention class that is geared toward third graders.

Fernholz is asking the public for ideas for programs, either for youth or adults, to contact him via email at jfernholz@greenecountyiowa.gov
