There are two candidates running for Iowa Senate District 12, and today we talked with Republican incumbent Amy Sinclair.
Sinclair grew up on the family farm in Putnam County in Missouri, just across the Iowa state line, and moved to Iowa in 1994. She has worked for a newspaper, taught adult education and General Educational Development, been an office manager for an agriculture supply store, and held elected offices on a county and state level. Sinclair tells Raccoon Valley Radio why working with legislators across the aisle is important.
“I was elected into the minority. So for the first four years that I served in the Iowa Senate, I didn’t get anything done if I didn’t work across the aisle. So I found a partner in crime, a Democratic Senator that we agreed on a lot of things, and so I would work with him on some law enforcement issues. In fact, the first bill that I actually successfully got across the finish line and signed by the governor was a bill that he drafted and had his name on it because I knew it would never go anywhere with my name on it.”
Another area that Sinclair mentions is her continuing to work to help victims of the May 21st tornado that tore through Adair County, especially Greenfield, but that she was glad to be of help when the disaster first hit as well. Sinclair explains that some topics she believes will be of importance in the coming session are the budget, property taxes and inflation. She shares why she is running for reelection.
“It is important to me as we move forward in our state that we maintain those advances that we’ve made here in the state over the last eight years. We have the fifth highest starting teacher pay in the nation. We have, as I said, the sixth lowest income tax rate for personal income taxes. We have no income tax on retirements, we have no estate tax anymore, and yet we are still able to fund our priorities.”
Sinclair is running against Democrat candidate Nicole Loew. For the full candidate interview, along with interviews with other candidates in contested races in the KKRF in Depth Meet the Candidates News Magazine, click the link below.
