A proposed project for the main highway in Jefferson by the Iowa Department of Transportation likely will not move forward.
Following this past Tuesday’s Jefferson Street Committee meeting, it was decided that the project to reduce Highway 4 through Jefferson from four to three lanes will not proceed. City Administrator Scott Peterson says the DOT data, after they compiled the community feedback, found that out of the almost 90 comments, either online or written submissions, about 90 percent were either neutral or not in favor of the project.
Peterson points out that the recommendation will go before the full city council at their next meeting on November 12th, as he explains why he wants this to be a finalized decision by the city council.
“I really do want that to be done in (a) public (setting). I know it’s been a huge issue within the community and we really do want an ending decision to be made on this (and) have it come before the council and kind of bring this to closure.”
Peterson adds that he would be very surprised if the city council did not affirm the recommendation from the Street Committee.
