There are two candidates running for Iowa Senate District 12, and today we talked with Democratic challenger Nicole Loew.

Loew grew up in Wisconsin on a dairy farm, and is a first generation college graduate, having received her bachelors in nursing from Winona State University, and then her Master’s Degree and Doctorate from the University of Iowa later in life. She currently lives in Chariton, Iowa with her husband and three children. Loew shares what she is a key piece to working with legislators from across the aisle.

“I see that one in a way that we relate to one another as legislators. I think that we need to find ways that we can recognize the humanity in each other and connect on that. So really getting to know each other on a personal level so that we can begin to build respect for each other. Because until we have respect for each other, we’re not gonna get anything done, we’re not gonna be able to work together. The other piece of that humanity piece is also putting it back into the decisions that we’re making. And so are our policies human centered?”

Loew mentions that she visited Greenfield shortly after the May 21st tornado, and has been back multiple times and is impressed with the resiliency and camaraderie of the community, and how far they have progressed in recovery efforts. She explains that should she be elected, she would listen to constituents in and around Greenfield on what they need to continue to rebuild, because she believes that they know what they need best. Loew also shares why she decided to put herself on the ballot.

“I’m running for District 12 Senator for the same reason I became a nurse and got my PhD and that’s because of rural people. Rural people are the reason that I became a nurse and I figured that if I could take care of them then that’s step one, right? I was really fortunate to come from a long line of rural women, farm women who are so hardworking and so resourceful, but I learned early on, that that resourcefulness and work ethic came from a place of scarcity.”

Loew explains that there are a few topics that she would like to work on should she be elected, including education funding, eminent domain abuse, and healthcare in the state. She is running against Republican incumbent Amy Sinclair.
