The city of Jefferson’s Beggar’s Night is fast approaching and with that are some safety reminders for all involved.
Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse reminds trick or treaters to only approach houses that have their porch lights on, during the designated hours, and avoid approaching vehicles with someone you do not know. He advises parents to have reflectors or reflective tape on their child’s costume so they are more easily seen by others, including motorists, and try not to cross the street from anywhere, except from the appropriate crosswalk.
Clouse reminds motorists to be vigilant for kids and families on Thursday, along with other motorists that might be parked at the curb, but then suddenly enter the road getting kids from block to block.
“There can be some chaos when it comes to trick or treating, but ultimately our goal is for the kids to have the best, greatest time that they can have. And for that everyone gets through it and back home safely. So whatever we can do, anything that we can do to help that is worth doing.”
Clouse adds to make sure to inspect candy and other treats once you are back home.
“Obviously, anything that is not wrapped, unless it came from a relative, you probably don’t want to risk that. That’ll go right into the garbage. Anything that is opened, you see a corner on something torn, it’s not worth the risk, just throw that into the garbage.”
The city of Jefferson’s Beggar’s Night is Thursday from 5-7pm.
Additionally, the Greene County Medical Center Extended Care encourages kids to visit them from 4:30-5:30pm at the main lobby on Halloween. Clouse invites everyone to Gospel Open Bible Church where there will be officers, along with the Jefferson Fire Department and Greene County Ambulance personnel on hand for kids to explore the different vehicles, and a special guest appearance with Life Flight and their helicopter, weather permitting. That event is also from 5-7pm and their Trunk or Treat. Finally, the Sierra Community Theatre is having a public haunted house in the basement of the movie theater from 5:30-7:30pm for free, but free will donations will be accepted.
