A ballot measure was passed during the 2024 November General Election that impacts the makeup of the Dallas County Supervisors.

Supervisor Chair Brad Golightly says there have been conversations surrounding the topic of increasing the number of supervisors from the three to five members, which was put on the ballot for the recent election. According to the Dallas County Auditor’s Office, the ballot measure needed a simple majority to pass and it did with 66.7% of the 35,000 votes and will now add two more members to the board for a total of five. Golightly is fine with the result, but comments that it’s up to the residents.

“Well I think it’s okay if that’s what the people want. We serve the people and if they need or want some more representation that way, I think that’s okay.”

Golightly is in his 22nd year on the Board and admits that they have tried to obey the Code of Iowa with their decision making. He exemplifies that Dallas County has been able to keep the tax levies among the lowest in the state. The total amount of votes will be canvassed at Wednesday’s Supervisors meeting, then the board would transition to five members sometime in 2025.
