There are several Veterans Day activities happening in Jefferson.
At 12:30pm the Greene County High School Student Council is inviting local veterans and the public to its program in the auditorium. Sadie Shannon tells Raccoon Valley Radio the band and choir will perform, along with a brief history of Veterans Day, to a poem reading and a video, as well as the guest speaker, Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Michael Bierl. Following the program will be an ice cream social with local veterans.
The Paton-Churdan Student Council is also having its annual Veterans Day program at 1:30pm. Student Council Sponsor Makayla Sparr says kindergarten through 12th grade students will be participating in the program, either singing, giving letters, candy or thank you notes to the veterans in attendance, along with reading poems and a special guest speaker with Colonel Monica Brouse, who is with the 132nd Wing in Des Moines and is retiring after 37 years in military service.
Finally, the Jefferson VFW Post #9599 is having a free ice cream social at 1pm at the VFW Hall on the east side of the downtown square. Commander Jim Martin says the public can enjoy ice cream for free, and they will play fun bingo games as well.
