There is a reminder for some hunters in Iowa about a change to a deer tag they could use starting this year.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jeremy King says that in the 2024 legislative session, there was a change made to landowner/tenant tags. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that if a hunter does not harvest a deer and fill out the tag, it can be used in other seasons besides the one it was purchased in.

“Let’s say you would have bought your landowner tenant tag in October and you bow hunted with it. And both archery seasons end on December 5th. Let’s say December 6th rolls around, you have some time free, there’s no need to go buy another deer tag for gun one. That landowner tenant tag will be good through all those seasons until you fill that tag.”

King mentions that if hunters use the landowner/tenant tag in this way, they do have to follow the rules and regulations of the seasons they attempt to fill it in, which includes using the proper firearm for the season.
