The Paton-Churdan School District recently announced its certified enrollment figures.

According to Superintendent Brian Johnson, P-C’s certified enrollment that was counted on October 1st showed a 0.2 decrease to 188 students, which Principal Annie Smith says every year they look to the enrollment to be at least steady. As for the number of students that enrolled out Johnson says there was a decline of 4.2 students to 54, compared to those who open enrolled into the Rocket district was down two with a total of 42.

Smith points out that the district tends to monitor those open enrollment numbers because that typically accounts for one-quarter of the total school enrollment.

“I just feel like in rural Iowa, just in general I think if you talk to many, many districts across the state, you’re going to hear the same thing, but it such a fluctuating students in, students out, (and) students moving. It’s much different than if you’re talking about metro numbers. But for us, we just are excited when that enrollment just is very similar. We can just keep down the path that we’ve been doing.“

The certified enrollment is what the state bases public school funding on for the next school year.
