As many families gather today to celebrate Thanksgiving, people tend to overindulge and Iowa State Patrol reminds drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel on a very full stomach.
Sergeant Alex Dinkla reminds people about putting other lives at risk when it comes to drunk driving, but acknowledges that drowsy driving can have the same effects. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that overeating can emit drowsiness within the body, and advises that people take action if they are sleepy while driving.
“If you’re tired, pull over, (and) find someone else that can drive your vehicle, or pull over to a safe area that you feel comfortable, get a little rest, and then get back to driving.”
Dinkla advises that taking a short nap can restore energy levels and allow you to arrive at your destination safely. He says that the amount of rest varies depending on the distance needed to travel. Dinkla adds that the most congestion on the roadways will be tomorrow and Saturday.
