The Dallas County Health Department provides advice about helping with fall prevention as adults get older.

Community Health Educator Natalie Peters tells Raccoon Valley Radio that older individuals are susceptible to falling due to muscle weakness, a declining sense of balance, or even problems with vision that go unaddressed. She notes that medications can lead to dizziness then wind up with people falling and shares pointers on what people can do in order to avoid it.

“Exercise regularly to maintain or improve your balance, strength, or flexibility. And then you can also make your home safer by using non-slip rugs around the home, adding grab bars in the bathroom, keeping rooms well lit, especially at night, and also be sure to put away any clutter or cords or anything like that that can be tripping hazards too.”

Peters suggests talking to a doctor about chronic conditions and that they can offer good footwear to assist with balancing. She describes that people need to be completely honest with their doctor about their fall history. Any questions can be directed to the Dallas County Health Department at (515)-993-3750.
