The Adair – Casey / Guthrie Center boys basketball team recently made a donation to the food pantries in Casey and Guthrie Center.

Head Coach Lance Kading says that the donation comes after the team hosted an Achieve Scrimmage, a concept brought forward by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union as a way for teams to conduct a community service project to be able to use one of their scrimmages as a real game, without having it reflect on their records. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the scrimmage was played against Woodbine, and that the teams agreed to use the scrimmage as a food drive for the local food pantries. Kading shares why it’s important for the team to be able to do this.

“Well, you know, I think it’s just important. People always talk about sports, and the life lessons, and this is a way for the kids to show that there’s more to life. I know as a teenager in high school, you got a lot going on, but just for them to be able to step back and think about helping to serve the community that supports them, and specifically with the food bank, you know, you never want anybody to be hungry, but it’s a reality. We can help out on fighting that hunger a little bit, especially this time of year when it’s getting cold and we’re getting close to the holidays. That’s a good way for the kids to be involved.”

Kading mentions that after the scrimmage, the food was left at the school so that other students could see how much had been donated, and to donate items if they wanted to as well. He adds that from there, AC/GC Guidance Counselor Barb South worked with the team to get everything packaged up and delivered, so that the two pantries could stock their shelves.
