An organization in Dallas County recently held an event that will brighten the holidays for many families.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Benevolent Association finished their Shop with a Cop event this past Saturday. Sheriff Adam Infante tells Raccoon Valley Radio that officers escorted approximately 50 children in Dallas County in their vehicles to the Walmart in West Des Moines. He describes that the sheriff’s office gives the kids each $150 for them to spend on family members and themselves. Infante admits that he’s fond of watching the kids shop every year.

“Most of them, you wouldn’t believe the list they come with. ‘My mom needs pants for work, my dad needs a hammer for work,’ and there’s a lot of times we have to talk to these kids into buying themselves or their brothers and sisters a toy or something fun. When they want to buy something useful, and that kind of stuff is what I love, (but) it’s heartbreaking at the same time. These kids that participate in this every year are awesome, we love it.”

Infante notes that he has been apart of the event for the last 26 years and is grateful to continue to watch it evolve.
