2020 Greene County High School graduate Carter Morton from Jefferson is a multi-event track & field athlete at the University of Northern Iowa. At the Dec. 13-14 Iowa State University Heptathlon inside the Lied Student Recreation Center in Ames, Morton won the heptathlon with 5,776 points, a new personal best, topping his old mark of 5,698. ISU’s Thai Thompson was second with 5,649 points.

Four of the seven events were contested on Friday with Morton setting personal best performances in the 60 meter dash (6.95 seconds), long jump (7.50 meters, 24 feet, 6 inches), shot put 12.79 meters, 41 feet, qo inches). He was third in the 60, first in the long jump, second in the shot, and he placed second in the high jump (2.04 meters, 6 feet, 6 inches). Saturday started with the 60 meter hurdles where he was second in 8.42 seconds. The Pole Vault was next at 4.60 meters, 15 feet, 1 inch, good for a first place tie. The 1,000 meter run was the final event. Morton ran 2:48.77, placing him second in the race and in first place overall.

There were 10 competitors that finished all seven events. Scoring is based on a point system for each event. Athletes are competing against each other while at the same time attempting to accumulate as many points as they can in each event. The highest point total for all seven events combined is the overall winner.

Carter is the son of Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson. He was an all-around athlete at Greene County High School earning All-State honors in football, in addition to being a track and field State place winner, and an All-Conference basketball player.
