On Wednesday, two Greene County High School students got a chance of a lifetime to perform with a world-renowned a capella group.
Senior Noah Hinote and junior Carter Petterson were nominated by Choir Director David Heupel to perform with 34 other high school male singers from 13 schools in the Central Iowa area with The King’s Singers, who are an all-male a capella ensemble from the United Kingdom. Both Hinote and Petterson were unaware of who The King’s Singers were but after being told how big of a deal it was to sing back-up for a couple of songs with the national touring group, Hinote thought the experience was in a word “incredible.”
“Before we went, we obviously practiced. We used the recording that you can find on YouTube and I remember the first time that they sang that we heard them sing the song that we would be doing, I literally laughed, because it sounded exactly like it did in the recording. And I thought that was absolutely incredible because it was live, no microphones, no anything, it was strictly their voices. The experience was very cool. They’re very talented. I don’t think I’ll ever see a singer as good as those guys are (The King’s Singers).”
Petterson shared what he thought was one of the most memorable moments for him.
“The fact that they had no other instruments, occasionally they did bring on like a tambourine or something, but they had no piano, they just knew what to do and they sounded gorgeous.”
The concert was held at the Sheslow Auditorium on the Drake University campus in Des Moines.
