Just seven Greene County wrestlers took part in Saturday’s Carroll Invitational Wrestling Tournament, but four won individual titles. The Rams finished fifth among 11 teams despite not entering half of the 14 weight classes. Twin brothers Brennan and Jaron Jacobs, Gavyn Winters. and Degan Miller, were winners of their weight classes.

Brennan was seeded third among the four competitors at 106 lbs. and won a 12-1 major decision in the semis before winning his first varsity tournament title, 7-2. Jaron was seeded fourth among seven in the 113 lbs. bracket and he went 3-0 with falls in 2:08 and 4:31 before racking up a 21-12 major decision in the title match. Both are sophomores.

Winters, a senior, was top seeded among six wrestlers at 120 lbs. and he went 2-0 on the day with a 23-5 technical fall in the semifinals, followed by a title match fall in just 1:08. Winters had a quarterfinal round bye.

Miller was in his first invitational final and he was seeded second, but rolled to the 165 lbs. title 32 second fall in the title match after he won 7-1 decision in the semifinals. Miller had a quarterfinal round bye.

Senior Jacob Harmeyer won his first match at 138, then suffered a shoulder injury in the semifinals, although he continued after an injury timeout. He lost by fall in the semis, lost by fall in the consolation semifinals, then medically forfeited the fifth place match and finished sixth.

Senior Crew Conner at 150 lbs. finished in fourth place after being seeded second. A first period fall was followed by a 7-4 overtime loss in the semifinals. A win by fall in the consolation semifinals put Crew in the third place match, which he lost by fall.

Sophomore Nehemiah Hoyt at 175 lbs. finished in fifth place. He won by fall in round one, lost by fall in the quarterfinals, lost by fall in the consolation semifinals, then won a 15-0 technical fall in the fifth place match against the wrestler he lost by fall to in the quarterfinals.

Of the 21 matches Greene County wrestled on Saturday, Kirk Davis’ team won 15 of them. Eleven of the victories earned bonus points with six pins.

Westwood (Sloan) won the team title with Carroll second, and Storm Lake third. Manson-Northwest Webster was fourth, one point ahead of the Rams.

The Rams hope to get some of their injured wrestlers healthy enough to join the lineup in January. That includes senior Brent Dennhardt, a two-time State qualifier and 2023 State Tournament eighth place finisher. He suffered a severe ankle injury prior to Thanksgiving and has not wrestled yet.
