The Greene County School District continues to provide services to less fortunate students on a regular basis.

At-Risk Liaison and Equity Coordinator Emily Gannon says one of the programs she handles is their Backpack Program. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that forms are sent to families every week in their newsletters to families for the parents and/or guardians to opt them into the program where on Fridays, students are given enough food to get them through the weekend. She points that on average about 80 students are utilizing this program on a weekly basis.

“It has definitely increased. I think two things: we can more families in need and we also have more awareness that we’re here and we want to help people.”

Gannon explains that because her office is at the high school, she can additionally help assist students on a more personal level.

“Just really basic needs. So anything you can think of that you need on a day to day basis (such as) hygiene products, I give out a lot of deodorant, and helping kids with warm clothes. Now I’m seeing kids who need boots or who need a winter coat, or need more than just that one clean hooded sweatshirt. And just making sure they have those warm items. Whatever we can do to keep them at school.”

Gannon adds that anyone can make a monetary donation to help further the school district’s cause to ensure students have nutrition at home through the Backpack Program or basic needs throughout the school year.
