It’s the break for the Holidays for the girls and boys that bowl for Greene County High School. It’s year two of the sport for the Rams and John Woodford of Spare Time Lanes in Jefferson coaches both teams. The boys have a 1-1 dual meet record and the girls are 0-2.

The coach preaches how important it is to avoid “open” frames, a frame in which the bowler doesn’t record a strike or a spare. “Open frames hurt a lot! We can’t have open frames, so our good bowlers have to basically “mark” every frame. Our bowlers that are coming up, just  learning, they have to mark at least 80% of the time, so there’s a lot of pressure on them.”

Woodford added the girls that bowl for the Rams are largely new to the sport, but he’s seen improvement not only in their scores, but in picking up splits in individual and Baker games. “Marking is a big key for us,” he added.

The Rams were to have started January competition on the 6th vs. Ballard (Huxley) at Perfect Games in Ames, but that has been moved back to Jan. 17. As it stands currently, the schedule has the Rams starting January vs. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) at Spare Time Lanes on Jan. 9 at p.m. That is JV/varsity boys’ bowling as the Knights do not have a girls’ team.
