A new business in Jefferson spotlights self-care and improving overall skin.

Maddie Van Pelt is the owner of Root of Beauty Skin Company and is living her dream job of owning her own business, but after high school, that is not how it started. The life-long Grand Junction resident and 2022 Greene County High School graduate says she attended Iowa State University for one year, where she studied agriculture but quickly found out it wasn’t for her.

“Agriculture was just not the way for me. Living on a farm was more of my thing rather than studying it. I was a dancer at the Rhythm Room for 15 years, so I did have a background experience in doing makeup, and hair, and was always doing that in my free time. So of course my second option was following my dream and going to beauty school.” 

Van Pelt then went to the Iowa School of Beauty and graduated in July of 2023, then following that went to work at a spa in Ankeny. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio she didn’t like the chain spa environment where people didn’t get customized treatments and there would be different staff handling the same client. So Van Pelt explains she wanted to open her own place that is welcoming and the same person is treating the same client.

Van Pelt describes the story behind the name of her business, Root of Beauty Skin Company.

“Root of Beauty kind of translates in two ways for me, the first way being skin care. These are my roots, these are what I’m comfortable with, and I had to learn my own beauty, my own skin care through my roots. Sticking to my roots, I’d say, and beauty does begin in your roots. The more you grow, and flourish and take care of them, the more that they will grow and flourish with you.”

Van Pelt has several services including facials, corrective skin care treatments and products that are customized, lash and brow lifting and tinting, microblading and facial and body waxing, among others. Root of Beauty Skin Company is open Tuesday through Friday from 9am-7pm and Saturday from 9am-3pm.
