With some predicted snowfall this week, motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions of the roadway.

Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises drivers to take extra time to navigate the roadways if they are snow or ice covered.

“Just make sure you’re driving at a speed that you can maintain control of the vehicle. If you do lose control of the vehicle make sure you turn into the slide, not the opposite direction, turn into it. And then just keep in mind that all bridges are probably going to be iced over faster than the roadway. Just drive slower.”

Williams notes that if someone does slide into a ditch, to either call 911 or their non-emergency number at 515-386-2155 to report what happened and approximately where they are so deputies can respond. He adds to make sure there are some blankets, snacks, bottled water and a phone charger that works inside the vehicle as it may take some time for a deputy to reach your location.
