The AC/GC Chargers basketball teams made the long trip to Clarinda, and came home with some hard fought wins against a larger school.
In the girls game, the Chargers trailed 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but were able to tie it up going into halftime. AC/GC then went on a strong run, but Clarinda answered, and the third quarter ended with a 35-34 lead for AC/GC. The Chargers put on some extra points in the final quarter, and finished with a 53-44 victory. Senior Shay Lemke shared what it was like playing against an unfamiliar team.
“I mean, definitely if you were watching the six foot girl in the paint, we’ve never had to play against someone that tall. So that was definitely a challenge and they have good shooters on the outside too. So being able to guard them in the lane, but also getting out on them was really our key in our defense.”
The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game went to Becca Littler’s performance on the free throw line in the final minutes, as she made five of her six shots to help keep the Chargers in the lead. The Crafty’s Coffee and Gifts Player of the Game went to Camdyn Richter, who led all scorers on the night. She mentioned her thoughts on the game.
“It was pretty nerve wracking, but we knew that if we wanted to win, we had to stop the girl coming (in the) middle and the lob. And that’s what we did, and we just rebounded and outscored them there towards the end.”
For the boys game, the Chargers kept a lead the entire time, but it was close the entire first half. They ended the first quarter up 13-12, and went into halftime up 24-22. AC/GC built up the lead after the break, finishing the third quarter up 42-35, and then continued their lead through the final quarter, ending the game with a 59-51 victory.
The Dub P Apparel Elite Fit Play of the Game came in the form of good, heads up assists, with Jathan South and Joe Crawford both finding Payton Policky in the paint for some baskets. The assist from Crawford ended in a spinning fade away from Policky. The Crafty’s Coffee and Gifts Player of the Game went to Noah Kading, who led the team in scoring, and came in clutch in the final minutes of the game with some made free throws to keep the lead up. He explains what it’s like to work with talented teammates on the court.
“It just makes everything a lot easier when we can all score, we can all pass, we can all rebound, and it makes everything easier, because the defense can’t focus on one guy or two guys. They gotta worry about all of us.”
The Chargers return to action tonight, as they host the Ogden Bulldogs in a set of make-up games. The Raccoon Valley Radio Sports Network will broadcast the games on the KKRF2 online live stream.
