Five high school students from Adel-DeSoto-Minburn were runners up at a state competition.
According to Industrial Technology Teacher Alex Reams, ADM students Lucas Farber, Corbin Reed, Colby Simons, Roen Lenz, and Ethan Johnson finished second out of 28 teams for the ABC Craft Championships Carpentry Competition in Des Moines. Reams explains that the boys created a six-foot wide by four-foot long structure that resembled a dog playhouse. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that ADM has been apart of this competition for the last five years, but have never been able to tally a place inside the top three. Reams outlines that this year’s team consisted of two sophomores, a junior, and two seniors, and that the group exceeded his expectations.
“They just did a really good job of managing the project. I was really kind of expecting to just get some experience with them to be able to compete a little bit better next year and the year after, but they did a really good job overall to finish the project, and ended up with second place, so it was really cool to see.”
Reams mentions that the students were graded on their craftsmanship, time management, safety, and cleanliness. He illustrates that along with marking second place, they completed their project with 30 minutes left to spare.
