
Last night the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs basketball teams traveled to Newton High School for double header conference basketball action against the Cardinals. The Mustangs swept house at Newton, with the girls picking up a 45-36 victory over the Cardinals while the Mustangs boys defeated Newton 76-47.
The girls contest would have a slow start, with the Mustangs claiming a 9-3 lead and never look back. Meyer would have an electric first half, scoring 7 of the 9 first quarter points. Smid would also have a great night defensively with a big steal in the second and in the fourth to assist to Meyer. The Mustangs would take a 20-18 lead at halftime, and come back from the break scoring 16 in the third and 9 in the fourth. Meyer would end the night with 22 points while Smid would end the night with 9 to help the Mustangs claim a 45-36 victory over Newton.
In the boys contest the Mustangs would take the lead scoring an impressive 37 points in the first half. Cason would end the first half with 10 points, while Tate Perrin would score 8 and Lorenzen would score 5 with a buzzer beater lay up to add two more for the Mustangs before the end of the first half. With the score at 37-23, Newton would begin to gain momentum scoring 10 in the third and 14 in the fourth but the Mustangs would hang on to claim a 76-47 victory. The Perrin brothers would heat up in the second half raining threes to help the Mustangs score 39 in the second half.
The Mustangs girls now sit at 13-3 while the Mustang boys advance to 9-5. Both teams are back in action on Friday as Dallas Center-Grimes plays host to the Oskaloosa Indians. The girls go to battle first with tip off scheduled for 6pm.
