A Jefferson man was placed on probation after pleading guilty to drug possession.

According to court documents, 73-year-old Carter Fetters pled guilty to a Class D Felony for third or subsequent possession of marijuana. He had a five year prison sentence suspended and was placed on probation for three years with the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. Court documents show that he must also undergo a substance abuse treatment program.

The charge stemmed from a traffic stop on Highway 4 and Lincoln Way on May 8, 2024. When the Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy made the stop because Fetter did not obey the posted stop sign, the deputy smelled marijuana coming from Fetter’s vehicle. The deputy found 13 drug-related items inside the vehicle that were sent to the Criminalistics Laboratory for testing, and the results were positive for marijuana.

Court documents show that Fetters was also ordered to pay over $1,300 in fines and surcharges. As per the plea agreement, Fetters had another Class D Felony for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and a simple misdemeanor for possession of drug paraphernalia dismissed.
