President Donald Trump introduced an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Denali, and the movement has made its way to Iowa.

In her Condition of the State, Governor Kim Reynolds suggested a bill that would follow the president’s path, renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, and Denali to Mount McKinley. Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen shares his view on the bill.

“I’d rather stay focused on policies that directly impact Iowa families and Iowa businesses and our schools. We process thousands of topics at the start of session, and sometimes it can be good to have a subcommittee so the public can lobby and weigh in. And maybe this will work as an amendment somewhere on a bigger bill.”

Sorensen mentions that he does understand the intent of the bill, but that there are more important matters for the legislature to set their sights on, like tax relief and education.
